The biggest discrepancies between the No-Limit Texas Holdem and the Limit Texas Holdem game are clearly shown up in position and hand value. In No-Limit position is much more important because the decisions you make will have a greater influence on your stack. If you trap someone in No-Limit with the help of position, you can win the whole stack of your opponent, as compared to collecting a few extra bets in Limit.

Such big connectors like A-K, A-Q and K-Q are less expencive in the No-Limit game because you are more likely to win small pots and lose big pots with these kinds of hands. Also, all pairs increase in value when playing No-Limit as you are able to double through your opponents when you hit a set. Having the big pairs, AA and KK, which increase in value too in No-Limit, gives you a chance to trap someone for his entire stack again.

In No-Limit you should always be aware about the amount of money you and your opponents have on the table. The variation in stack size has a significant impact on the way how the game is played.

These are some key advice for No-Limit Texas Holdem :

Playing too many starting hands. For instance, you should have a 20-30% view of the flop percentage in a standard $2/$4 No-Limit game. You’ll need to fold A-J in first position, K-T in middle position and Q-T in late position.

Table selection: Try to find and play in games where you have an edge. When you sit down you need at least a couple of weak players at the table.

Be quick to assess the opposition: who plays inferior hands, who folds at aggression, who bets with draws, who calls big bets with weak hands and draws, who bluffs, who can be bluffed, etc.

Fold or bet/raise (if the poker odds are with you). Do not call unless you have a good cause (as to have trapped an opponent).

As most players do not bluff, be respectful with most big bets and raises.

Basics of Pre-Flop Strategy

Most of the time if you have top pairs (AA-QQ) and top connectors (A-K, A-Qs) you should raise/re-raise. Then, when you make low pairs and various connectors pay, you may see flops against you. Just keep it in mind, they will often have the opportunity to double-up on you if they hit (but many beginners do not realize this and fold too often pre-flop).

It is good to stick to the premium hands. You will pay dearly to “chase” with second-best hands in No-Limit.

Show respect for strong tight players. For example, if a strong player raises under the gun, you should drop A-Q.

Be disposed to call and take flops with very weak players when they have entered the pot.

Pay attention to common mistakes in No-Limit Texas Holdem , among them are the following:

  1. When facing a bet calling with weak holdings
  2. Not releasing a decent hand when beat, as a result, losing entire stack on one hand
  3. Playing too many starting hands
  4. Not raising pre-flop with premium hands (pressing on limpers holding drawing hands) and then going too far with them after the flop
  5. Over/under betting the pot, thus, risking a lot to win small/not protecting hand
